Editing the Footer Menu

The footer menu is the set of links that appears at the bottom of every page — usually things like Privacy Policy, Accessibility Statement, Safeguarding, and Contact. It’s managed separately from the main navigation menu, in its own location, but the process for editing it is very similar.
Finding the footer menu
(Depending on your permissions)
- In the WordPress admin sidebar, go to Appearance > Menus.
- At the top of the screen, use the Select a menu to edit dropdown and choose the one labelled Footer Menu (naming may vary slightly — look for “Footer” in the name).
- If your site uses the full site editor instead, go to Appearance > Editor > Navigation and select the footer menu from the list there.
If you’re not sure which menu controls the footer, get in touch and we can confirm — this can vary slightly between diocese themes.
Adding a link
- On the left of the menu editing screen, find the page, post, or custom link you want to add.
- Tick the box next to it and click Add to Menu.
- The item appears in the menu structure on the right — drag it into position.
- Click Save Menu.
Reordering, renaming, and removing links
- Reorder — drag and drop items up or down within the menu structure box.
- Rename — click the arrow on the right of a menu item to expand it, then edit the Navigation Label field. This changes what visitors see without changing which page it links to.
- Remove — expand the item the same way and click Remove, or drag it into the grey trash area if your version shows one.
Always click Save Menu after making changes — nothing is saved automatically on this screen.
Adding an external link
To link to something outside the site (a national Church of England page, a partner organisation, etc.), use the Custom Links panel on the left:
- Enter the full web address, including
https://, in the URL field. - Enter the text you want visitors to see in the Link Text field.
- Click Add to Menu, then drag it into position and save as above.
Tips
- Keep the footer menu short — it’s meant for a small number of essential, site-wide links, not a full sitemap.
- Check any legal or policy links (Privacy Policy, Accessibility Statement) point to the current version of the page — these are often looked up for compliance reasons.
- Changes here apply site-wide immediately after saving, so double-check wording and links before saving if the footer is heavily used.
